We are looking for a mid-level AI Developer & Automation Engineer (fluent English required), full-time freelance and remote for a Canadian company in the heavy-vehicle rental, repair, and roadside-assistance industry.

Description
We are looking for a hands-on AI Developer & Automation Engineer to build practical AI features and internal automations into real, production software. The work is focused on real-world integrations — for example, using AI to clean up and translate work orders into customer-ready invoices, or capturing data from supplier-invoice PDFs and pushing it into the database — not academic or research-only ML. You will be a small team's go-to person across AI integration, automation (n8n), and general backend development.

Responsibilities
• Develop and integrate AI/LLM features into existing and new software applications (e.g., cleaning and translating work-order text into customer invoices; extracting structured data from supplier-invoice PDFs).
• Build, deploy, and monitor AI integrations for production use, primarily via AI APIs (OpenAI, Azure AI, or similar).
• Design and implement workflow automations in n8n (or similar) for internal operations, system integrations, and ETL / data-processing.
• Build and maintain integrations between APIs, SQL Server databases, and backend systems.
• Develop backend components and scripts in Python (primary) and TypeScript / Node.js (secondary).
• Prepare and structure data for AI and automation use cases; help establish MLOps best practices and improve the current basic CI/CD setup.

Obligatory requirements:
• Fluent English, written and spoken (B2 or higher)
• 2–4+ years of hands-on development experience (mid-level builder, not academic/research-only)
• Proven experience integrating AI in production applications (ideally via AI APIs such as OpenAI or Azure AI)
• Solid understanding of machine learning fundamentals
• Strong programming experience in Python
• Working knowledge of TypeScript / JavaScript and Node.js
• Experience with at least one workflow automation tool (n8n, Make, Zapier, or Power Automate)
• Experience working with SQL databases (SQL Server preferred)
• Comfortable with Git / GitHub workflows
• Minimum 4-hour daily overlap with EST business hours

Desired
• FastAPI (preferred); Flask or Django also acceptable.
• Experience with Docker / containerization.
• Cloud exposure, Azure preferred (AWS or GCP also valuable).
• PowerShell scripting and experience automating Windows-based environments.
• Experience with NLP, computer vision, or predictive analytics.
• Experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or scikit-learn (custom models are a plus, but not the main focus of this role).
• Familiarity with MLOps practices and modern CI/CD workflows.
• Experience with additional SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL).
• Comfortable working independently and as part of a small team.

Working conditions
• Salary: 1,600-2,400 USD/month gross (based on experience)
• Contract: Freelance — independent contractor.
• Schedule: Full-time, 100% remote, with core hours covering a minimum 4-hour overlap with EST business hours; remaining hours flexible.
• Start date: As soon as possible.
