We are looking for an experienced Art Director to define and lead the visual direction of our Dark Fantasy Anime ARPG "Astral Sync", shaping a cohesive visual identity from existing project materials, guiding artists and external partners, ensuring consistency across all art disciplines, and combining strong artistic vision with practical production leadership to turn creative ideas into clear guidelines, feedback, and production-ready direction.
Responsibilities
- Further define and maintain the visual direction of the game.
- Create and maintain visual guidelines, style pillars, mood boards, and an art bible.
- Lead the visual development of key areas, especially the demo level.
- Provide clear, actionable feedback to concept artists, environment artists, character artists, and external partners.
- Translate high-level creative vision into production-ready direction.
- Establish clear visual rules for worldbuilding, environments, characters, materials, lighting, mood, and overall style.
- Ensure visual consistency between game art, IP identity, and related media such as webtoon material.
- Review and approve concepts, assets, paintovers, blockouts, and visual direction documents.
- Work closely with Production, Game Design, Level Design, Environment, Concept Art, and Technical Art.
- Make timely decisions that unblock artists and downstream production teams.
- Define what is must-have for demo, nice-to-have, and post-demo from an art direction perspective.
- Support outsourcing by providing clear briefs, references, approval criteria, and review feedback.
Requirements
- Proven experience as an Art Director, Lead Artist or similar role in game development.
- Strong portfolio showing stylized, anime-inspired, fantasy, or action-oriented visual direction.
- Experience creating visual guidelines, style guides, mood boards, art bibles, or production-ready art direction documents.
- Strong understanding of environment design, worldbuilding, shape language, color, mood, composition, and visual storytelling.
- Ability to provide clear, specific, and actionable feedback.
- Ability to make decisions under time and production constraints.
- Strong understanding of how visual direction affects gameplay readability, level design, and player experience.
- Ability to balance artistic quality with production reality.
- Strong communication skills in English.
- Ability to quickly understand, adapt to, and contribute within an established art direction and visual identity.
- Ability to work with limited time, startup constraints, and fast-moving production needs.
- Familiarity with AI tools for early visual exploration and reference gathering.
Nice-to-have
- Experience directing art for playable demos, vertical slices, or investor/publisher presentations.
- Experience with mobile game production constraints.
- Experience collaborating with webtoon, animation, or transmedia teams.
- Understanding of technical art, shaders, lighting, VFX, and asset production workflows.
- Ability to create paintovers, drawovers, rough concepts, or visual direction sketches when needed.
