HumanTruths is transforming how behavioral data is collected from underserved communities worldwide. We build an AI-powered voice agent-driven qualitative research platform on a Google Cloud-based, serverless architecture. Our mission-driven team collaborates with global partners including the United Nations, WHO, and GAVI, with support from Gates Foundation funding.
As a Backend & Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, you will own the backend that powers scalable AI voice interviews—from Cloud Run microservices to complex data pipelines and third-party integrations. You will influence architecture decisions, drive reliability, and enable secure, compliant data processing across distributed environments.

Key Responsibilities
Design and implement serverless backend platform on Google Cloud (Cloud Run, microservices) and build robust business logic with Node.js/Express or Python/FastAPI.
Architect event-driven workflows, campaign orchestration, and study management systems; develop secure API integrations with Retell AI, Prolific, Twilio, Busara.
Optimize Cloud Run autoscaling, cold starts, and resource allocation; manage service-to-service authentication and API gateway configuration.
Own database design and data engineering tasks, including PostgreSQL schemas and BigQuery analytics pipelines for transcript processing.
Implement data validation, quality checks, data masking, encryption, and PII handling; ensure compliance with IRB, GDPR, and related regulatory standards.
Configure IAM roles, Secret Manager, rate limiting, DDoS protection, and monitoring; implement CI/CD pipelines and IaC (Terraform).
Monitor, debug, and resolve production issues with distributed tracing and structured logging; optimize cloud costs and performance.

What you will bring
We are seeking a backend and cloud infrastructure specialist who can architect, build, and maintain a GCP-based serverless platform. You should have hands-on experience delivering production APIs (Node.js/Express or Python/FastAPI) within a serverless paradigm (GCP Cloud Run, AWS Lambda, or Azure Functions). You will design scalable microservices, database schemas, data pipelines, and secure integrations while upholding research integrity and regulatory compliance. Strong collaboration and documentation skills are essential, as you will contribute to technical design docs, system architectures, and governance practices.

Nice to have
Experience with Python for data processing; familiarity with voice AI platforms (Retell, Vapi, Bland AI, or Twilio Voice); SMS/WhatsApp messaging integrations; Kubernetes or GKE; open source contributions or technical blogging; experience working in African markets or international development projects; knowledge of GDPR/ SOC2 compliance and healthcare data handling.

What we offer

The initial contract spans 1-2 months with 80-160 hours per month, with potential conversion to equity after Module 1 success.
